How to Find Out if You Are Indexed

Before you start your submission campaign, it's smart to determine if your site and individual pages are already indexed in the major engines. Remember, "indexing" means that the engines have recorded your pages - and this is different than "positioning" which is based on ranking determinations.

Checking your indexing is crucial. If the search engine do not know about your site, it will never be found.

In Inktomi you can use a special command "originurl:" to verify if a specific web page is indexed or not. If you want to find out if the web page index.html is indexed on the website www.positiontech.com you can do the following:

  1. Go to: search.positiontech.com - this is the clean version of the Yahoo index that Position Tech supply as a service to Search/Submit and Index Connect customers.

  2. Type: originurl:http://www.positiontech.com/index.html into the search box and hit the submit button.

  3. If your web page is indexed you will see it listed. If the web page is not in the index you will get a search result page with no results.

TIP:
At Search Engine Watch you will find a much more detailed article about how to check if your website or individual web pages have been indexed.
